Sometimes a rechargeable battery, whether a regular one, can short-circuit. Some people intentionally cause short-circuits just to see what happens.

What happens if you short-circuit a battery on itself?
Any short-circuiting leads to the following effects:
- Heat.
- Explosion.
- Ignition.
- Energy element discharge.
If the battery is well-made, it will simply heat up and discharge. A poorly made battery will likely leak. Some may even explode. For example, lithium-ion batteries can easily explode if short-circuited.
Heating occurs as a result of direct operation of electric current.

Causes of short circuits
- Just for the sake of an experiment. I wonder what will happen?!
- The battery is transported near metal objects and contact with it leads to the lock.
- Malfunction of equipment that uses a current source.
Thus, a battery short-circuited on itself most often causes heating and discharge.
