Batteries and frost

Many people wonder whether regular batteries will work in freezing temperatures. Surely many have noticed that batteries perform poorly in temperatures of -30 to -35 degrees Celsius. This is usually seen in phones or cameras.

Here everything depends on what type of energy sources are used. If used salinebatteries, they won't withstand any frost. But lithium or lithium-ion batteries will cope with poor conditions just fine. In fact, they are the ones nickel-cadmium batteriesThey are considered frost-resistant. But their performance will still be low.

Change in capacity depending on temperature at -20º C compared to +20º C

  1. Salt (baht) 0%
  2. Alkaline (bat) 7%
  3. Lithium (bat) 25%
  4. NiMH (battery) 30%
  5. NiCd (battery) 75%

Unstable operation in unfavorable conditions is due to electrolyte ions. In cold conditions, the chemical reaction proceeds slowly or stops altogether.

If you freeze a battery to -15 degrees Celsius, it will restore its properties. But if you keep it at -40 degrees Celsius or below, it will be seriously damaged. And it doesn't matter whether you have a rechargeable battery or a rechargeable one.
